Artist Spotlight

Artist Akin Okusami AKA axematic who has taken up residency in the gallery of Firepit. Come and watch him work, have a chat with him, he’s an artist, he thrives on attention 😉 . Seriously though his next project is really moving and deserves a lot of recognition. This is what it is about:

Legendary Drum & Bass artist Skibadee sadly passed away from diabetes on 27th February 2023, shocking the dance music sector and the wider music industry.

A pioneer in his field, he entered the fledgling Jungle scene way back in 1994 and quickly rose to the top of the pile, going from ‘graveyard shifts’ on Kool FM to headline act within 18 months. As a crowd favourite, he revolutionised the art of â€˜MCing’ with his call & response performances, and of course, his super lyrical ability, along with his lightening delivery.

Skibadee is also noted as the influence of a generation of superstar MCs such as Dizzy Rascal, Wiley and The So Solid Crew (who themselves have gone on to influence a next generation). He worked extensively with super- producer and DJ Shy FX, and was a member of legendary Drum & Bass duos 2x Freestyle, SAS and a founder member of DnB supergroup SASASAS until his untimely death.

On the 1st February 2025, Skibadee would’ve turned 50. To mark this occasion, his long-time friend, manager and confidant Akin Okusami aka Axematic, a portrait artist, is creating a large portrait of the charismatic wordsmith at Firepit Art Gallery, where he currently has residency. He will be painting the portrait in full public view; and in his words: “I can’t build him a statue, but I can do the next best thing, paint him a big ass picture!”

He is encouraging people to visit Firepit Art Gallery to watch him create the art piece, and is more than willing to answer questions about the legendary artist, taken too soon.

Then he’ll do it all over again to mark the 3rd anniversary of his passing at the end of February.

Other News

We are going to have two new neighbours! Gather, a community focused gym, where you will find a supportive, no-judgement environment. And Caspino, ‘Casual dining vibe of a bistro, coffee-focused atmosphere of a cafĂ©, and the comfortable, social spirit of a lounge.’ - Both opening this month. Whoop!

‘The Alfie Files’

Infamous Firepit dog Alfie, takes a moment each month to reflect on some local attractions. After believing this sculpture was a giant stick, I pointed out to him that it was actually a sculpture called, ‘Liberty Grip’ by Gary Hume, who modelled this sculpture in three separate sections, each based on the arm of a store mannequin.
Alfie, as you can see by his dramatic pose, would prefer to have not found this out.

Liberty Grip, is a 4 minute walk along the thames path from Firepit.
