Where does the time go? It seems like yesterday when I was putting together the previous Newsletter!
We have some awesome things going on this month. Hope to see you here. Love always, Marcus
Firepit Artist Spotlight: Shumaiya Khan

Describe practice: Abstract artist and writer. My practise based in emotional, metaphysical storytelling. Exploring juxtapositions around dynamic behaviours within; feminine expression & sensuality, death in all its forms and innate faith & spirituality. I work across oil, acrylic and charcoal mediums. I work with a few different brands and agencies communicating how a moment ‘feels’ in a visual narrative. My works are what I call, abstract-Baroque, which keeps this sense of romanticism and ethereal dreamlike hypnotic state. Many of my pieces have poetry I’ve written myself on the back communicating internal thoughts when creating the piece or pointing to wider societal frameworks.
What are you hoping to achieve at whilst being part of the collective at firepit?
To continue expanding my practice in scale and experimenting cross disciplinary with external artists. This meaning non-painters, artists who experiment with sound or film. My pieces contain spiritual or sensual narratives which go beyond who I am, so to see how those characters can come to life other than poetry or a painting, is the next step. Due to the wall space I’ve been given, I’m painting larger than previously, meaning I’m creating bodies of work for places which I want to see my works in.
Describe yourself: Dark, dry humouress, a liking for plants, nature, cats, candles, nice prayer mats and anything islamic really. Likes solitude. An early bird. Jazz, but all music. Direct. Can be sensitive to too much caffeine. Will continue caffeine addiction.
Artist superpower: To see the unseen and make the audience feel a little sick from the sensory overload from a single painting.
As well as having work displayed in the gallery at Firepit, Shumaiya has a solo show:
‘Fountain of Youth’, Solo show for Shumaiya Khan at The Lion and The Fox, Hatton Wall, Clerkenwell, London.
PV 15th November, 6-9:30pm - email to RSVP.
16 November -16th Febuary 2024.
Fountain of Youth takes us on a journey of growing down and grounding, across works made over 3 years. 14 pieces on display across painting, drawing and poetry.
Shumaiya also has a 19 painting solo at 67 Pall Mall on until February 2024. Email for catalogue of work
